It was G\u00f6ran Hansson, secretary general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, calling from Stockholm to inform her that she had won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About an hour later, Strickland\u2019s big win was announced to the rest of the world, and the fanfare that ensued went far beyond the usual media blip: Strickland, an associate professor of physics at the University of Waterloo, was only the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in the award\u2019s history, and the first since 1963.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the plaudits came voices of criticism for an award process that some believe has historically neglected women, and for a society that many feel does not do enough to foster the success of women in the sciences.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a fascinating secondary story quickly emerged on both social and traditional media, in what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2018\/10\/nobel-prize-physics-donna-strickland-gerard-mourou-arthur-ashkin\/571909\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201ca Metaphor for the Nobel Prize\u2019s Record With Women.\u201d As it turned out, Donna Strickland did not have her own Wikipedia article at the time of her award\u2019s announcement, despite her many achievements in her field, and her stature as president emeritus of a leading academic society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even more gallingly, a Wikipedia editor had drafted an article about Strickland on March 28, 2018 \u2013 several months before she won the Nobel Prize \u2013 only for the draft submission to be summarily rejected by another Wikipedia editor.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be sure, once word got out that Strickland was a new Nobel laureate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donna_Strickland\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Wikipedia article about her<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was created in a flash, and soon reached a respectable length and level of detail. But media outlets seized on Wikipedia\u2019s initial exclusion of Strickland \u2013 despite her many accomplishments \u2013 until she won the Nobel Prize in Physics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The headlines were quick to condemn the website: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1410909\/wikipedia-had-rejected-nobel-prize-winner-donna-strickland-because-she-wasnt-famous-enough\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWikipedia rejected an entry on a Nobel Prize winner because she wasn\u2019t famous enough\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/people\/the-nobel-prize-winning-scientist-who-wasn-t-famous-enough-for-wikipedia-1.3650212\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Nobel prize winning scientist who wasn\u2019t famous enough for Wikipedia\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2018\/oct\/03\/donna-strickland-nobel-physics-prize-wikipedia-denied\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFemale Nobel prize winner deemed not important enough for Wikipedia entry.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But just how accurate were these accusations? Was Donna Strickland truly \u201cnot important enough for Wikipedia\u201d? The answer is \u2026 not exactly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get to the heart of the matter, let\u2019s put aside the thorny topic of gender and systemic biases on Wikipedia and elsewhere, and ask a more basic question: <\/span><b>What does it take to get on Wikipedia? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just how famous does a person have to be to deserve an article on the world\u2019s most widely read encyclopedia?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Wikipedia\u2019s foundational principles is that Wikipedia is an <\/span><b>encyclopedia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_an_indiscriminate_collection_of_information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indiscriminate collection of information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so there needs to be some standard for a person (or any other topic, for that matter) to be judged suitable for inclusion.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard that the Wikipedia community implemented as the primary metric for inclusion is actually neither fame nor importance. It is<\/span><b> notability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Wikipedia\u2019s official <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Notability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notability policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, notable topics are \u201cthose that have gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large and over a period of time.\u201d Fame and importance (not to mention other factors like popularity, talent, and prestige) are deemed too <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Subjective_importance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subjective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to meet Wikipedia\u2019s inclusion criteria. Notability is where it\u2019s at.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of why Wikipedia chose notability as the linchpin of its operation is that it <\/span><b>can be demonstrated using references<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most Wikipedia articles must justify their inclusion by meeting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Notability#General_notability_guideline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Notability Guideline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><b>GNG<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sometimes called Wikipedia\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:The_answer_to_life,_the_universe,_and_everything\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden Rule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the GNG states: \u201cArticles generally require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the topic.\u201d Each part of this sentence represents a critical element of the GNG: \u201csignificant coverage\u201d excludes trivial mentions; \u201creliable sources\u201d excludes biased content and publications with poor editorial oversight; and \u201cindependent\u201d excludes content produced by the article\u2019s subject, such as a press release or an autobiography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Donna Strickland\u2019s importance and stature in her field before she won the Nobel Prize, she clearly did not pass the GNG \u2013 there was simply no significant coverage of her or her work in news media or elsewhere! This is unfortunately more typical of important people from previous generations who simply did not appear sufficiently in sources that live online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critically, there are also several subject-specific notability guidelines, which serve as a kind of back door to grant inclusion to subjects that may not pass the GNG. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the notability guideline for academics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dictates that an academic is notable if the person \u201cis or has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association.\u201d In hindsight, many in the Wikipedia community <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wikimediafoundation.org\/news\/2018\/10\/04\/donna-strickland-wikipedia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Donna Strickland should not have been rejected by Wikipedia even before winning the Nobel, despite the dearth of media coverage about her at the time, since she is a past president of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Optical_Society\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Optical Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the fact remains that by Wikipedia\u2019s formal standards \u2013 which value notability and media coverage over more subjective factors \u2013 Strickland\u2019s case for inclusion was, at best, contentious. As Wikimedia Foundation President Katherine Maher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-maher-wikipedia-gender-bias-20181018-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the aftermath of the Strickland affair, \u201cIf journalists, book publishers, scientific researchers, curators, academics, grant-makers and prize-awarding committees don\u2019t recognize the work of women, Wikipedia\u2019s editors have little foundation on which to build.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we go forward into the future, our generation\u2019s approach to appreciating women\u2019s achievements will require some serious edits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On October 2, 2018, in the pre-dawn hours in Ontario, Donna Strickland received a phone call that would change her life.
